As I was having coffee with a friend of mine who is a coach, he spoke passionately about the importance of the team culture and the adolescent boys he coaches having the courage to trust each other and the process. That notion got me thinking and it has been part of my meditation for days now. What resonated with me is the connection between courage and trust. Before now, I had not linked those two characteristics together. It occurred to me that we could apply this lesson of having the courage to trust to all aspects of our lives.
Trusting another human being takes real courage. It requires risk. We have to have faith in ourselves and in the other person. Faith that the other person will treasure our trust and not betray us, and faith that we will be trustworthy in return and also be able to grow from the experience no matter what the outcome. When we have been betrayed in the past, it becomes more difficult for us to trust. Our fears seem to dominate and overrule our courage. As I have learned and others have said so eloquently, courage is not the absence of fear, it is the presence of fear and doing it anyway. Think about how much more faith, action, and character it takes to be afraid yet trudge onward in spite of fears. What an adventure!!!
In one of my former posts I spoke of my frozen shoulder condition and how it exemplified how I was frozen with fears. Today, life is an adventure for me, in spite of my fears. It has taken me months to develop the courage to press onward in spite of my fear of the unknown; in spite of my past experiences of being hurt and betrayed. Today I have courage because I have a strong belief and faith in myself and in Big G (aka God, Great Spirit, Higher Power).
Courage involves taking a risk – a leap of faith if you will – and believing that the experience will be wonderful; and if it is not, having the belief and faith that you will be a better person for having the experience – no matter what. Courage stems from a belief and faith in Big G. Believing that there is some stronger, bigger force/entity in this universe that has the power to change things and the love to guide and protect us. Faith that Big G does in fact love us and will always be there to guide and protect if we believe – if we maintain conscious contact with Him daily.
We never truly know when we put our trust in another person if that trust will be treasured, returned, discarded or betrayed. However, if we put our trust in Big G, we have to believe it will always be treasured and we experience great joy in life as a result. Having the courage to trust another person is a tremendous opportunity for growth. Imagine the joy, the love and the adventure we have experienced in the past when our trust has been treasured and returned. It makes me smile just thinking about it!
Remember, if our trust is ever discarded or betrayed, we always have the choice to move on or to trust that person again. I urge you to not let one or two bad experiences taint the rest of your life or prevent you from experiencing all the happiness and freedom and joy life has to offer us. Be grateful for the experience, learn from it and move on. Expand your courage and trust others. Dont let your fear dominate.
Trust yourself to grow from all experiences, good and bad and grow in love. Have faith that Big G always has your back and will always be there to protect and guide you.
I challenge you to have the courage to trust – step up to the plate and take a swing at real joy and fulfillment. Believe you can hit a home run and YOU WILL!
Be well and be transformed!
