We all adopt various identities at different times in our lives – sometimes, even more than one identity at a time – our race, nationality, religion, occupation/profession, role in the family, etc. We must remember that all of these identities are temporary and external. They do not define our true selves. Our true authentic selves lie within each of us and for me, my real identity was created by Big G (my God). Our goal is to find that true self and live the life Big G has intended for us – one filled with Joy, Freedom, Abundance and most of all Love.
It is easy for me to become consumed by my different identities and allow my ego to take over. I have heard the definition of EGO as being “easing God out”….. it’s what stands in the way of my true connection to my Higher Power – the Great Spirit. As long as we are connected to our identities, rather than our innermost selves, when these identities change, we experience great pain and suffering. For example, when I was married, I took on the identity of Mrs. so in so. One of my identities was that of a wife. However, when that marriage ended, that identity ended as well and I experienced a sense of great loss, pain and loneliness. I had to dig deep down to reconnect with Big G and tap into His power and Love to define my true self.
When our external identities change, we experience fear, anxiety and disappointment. We are focused on the external world and people. If we stay stuck in this state, then it can turn into depression or addiction, because we are constantaly seeking external sources to find our True Self – not realizing we need to look within. No person, place or thing can define me – my Authentic and Real identity lies within me, and it was put there by the Great Creator when I was conceived.
My day begins with a prayer to God to allow me to be what He wants me to be that day. I ask Him to please direct my thinking and my actions so that I am of service to Him and to everyone I come in contact with during the day. In doing that, I am learning who I really am. In directing my thinking and my actions, Big G is letting me know my authentic self, and, here’s the bonus, in doing so I am learning to actually LOVE MYSELF! That’s a topic for another post for sure!
Our external identities are human creations, not divine. Today I choose to live in the Divine. Human creations are temporary, fallible, imperfect and at times disingenuous. Whereas Divine creations are all Loving, perfect and exactly as God planned them to be. Whenever we rely on humans we set ourselves up for loss and disappointment. We must rely on God for He is the ONLY constant and will NEVER fail us.!!!
Be well and Be transformed!
