A dear friend of mine coined this statement which is an expansion of Native American teachings. When I first heard it three years ago, I was puzzled and had to really meditate on its meaning. Pretty powerful stuff, I must say.
To listen with our eyes is to watch and observe people, places and things. Behaviors never lie….they reveal our true selves. Our minds can convince us of anything; however, actions speak louder than any words. I may say I like a certain person, but do I look them in the eyes while they are speaking? Does my smile extend to my eyes and not just my mouth? Am I truly present when I am around them? All these behaviors indicate my true feelings regardless of what I speak.
I love to people watch when I go somewhere….whether it’s out to eat or to an event…I spend lots of time just quietly watching the interactions of those around me. It is amazing what you can learn just by watching. The couple that sits at the breakfast table, both reading the newspaper and not engaging in any conversation throughout the whole meal….or the family that are all smiling and laughing and all talking at once. My personal pet peeve is watching young people on a date and they both have their faces in their smart phones!
One would hope that by communicating through our actions we, as animals, would further develop our other senses and instincts. Like the animal kingdom, we could develop a nonverbal means of communication, one that is more authentic, visceral, honest and fundamental. Lions and tigers and wolves and birds do not lie when they communicate – it is raw, direct, pure and authentic.
However when humans engage verbally, there is room for dishonesty, deceit and the tendency to hide our true thoughts and feelings. The difference is ego – easing God out – it’s the energy source that blocks us from Big G and also prevents us from truly being Free. Today people are full of fear, which is the tool of the ego. Ego uses fear to keep us captive and holds us hostage from true happiness. Please understand, I am no advocate of offending others or being insensitive. What I try to practice each day is being more mindful of my words and making sure that my actions and my words match, in a caring and kind way, to all that I encounter.
When we are listening with our eyes and seeing with our hearts, there is no room for ego’s energy. Our spirit is one with our Creator and we are in harmony with the energy of all living things around us, human, animals, plants and earth. When we tune into all these energies, ego is tuned out which allows us to love freely, live freely and be our authentic absolute best.
Tune into all living creatures around you today and try to hear what they are saying to you….with your eyes. See what they are saying to you…with your heart. Let me know what you experience!
Be well and be transformed!
